With the New Year officially here, many people are looking for ways to reset and reboot their health and wellness routines—and a seasonal detox program can be an excellent way to revitalize our bodies and minds as we enter into a new year.

When Should I Detox?

While our exposure to a vast array of chemical toxins is relatively new in human history, the practice of detoxification is not. Numerous cultures and time-honored medical systems around the world have recognized the importance of seasonal detoxification for optimal health and harmony. According to many traditions, spring and fall are particularly good times to detox. However, a safe and gentle detox program can be done any time of year. The New Year is a great time to start a seasonal cleanse as a way to reset your diet and health and avoid winter weight gain, balance and support immunity, calm digestion after holiday indulgences, and boost energy and vitality going into the new year.

What’s the best way to detox?

Detoxification has become popular as a fast track to achieve greater health and energy, and improve our diet and lifestyle habits with a focus on long-term wellness, disease prevention, and healing. What many people may not realize however, is that detox is not a quick fix. It can take years for toxins to bioaccumulate, meaning they build up in your body over time. This means that removing toxins from your body safely, and effectively, can also take time.

But the good news is, gentle approaches and gradual detox programs can be highly effective, giving you the long-term health benefits you’re seeking, without causing a “detox crisis”.

What is a detox crisis?

A “detox crisis” happens when we detox too quickly using methods like fasting, colonic protocols, and other aggressive detox treatments that can trigger side effects like headaches, fatigue, GI upset, nutrient depletion—and often cause more harm than good.

If you are planning to include an intensive detox protocol in your routine, it’s recommended to incorporate it within a more gentle, comprehensive, and holistic detox approach that can help you achieve total-body balance without aggressive “quick fixes”—and the “healing crises” they might cause.

It’s important to take detoxification as a step-by-step process and take your time. Toxins are a daily problem, so we need effective, daily solutions. The truth is, your body is detoxing all the time, including with every breath, and there are effective ways we can support and enhance these natural rhythms whenever we need additional support.

The Essentials of a Detox Diet

The most important aspect of a safe and effective detox program is a nourishing and cleansing detox diet. Detoxification is an energy-dependent process, so we need to supply the body with an abundance of nutrients including vitamins, minerals, enzymes and antioxidants to complete the process. By consuming whole, nutrient-dense foods like organic fruits and vegetables, raw nuts and seeds, and whole grains and legumes, we can give the body a broad-spectrum of powerful phytonutrients and antioxidants to increase detox capacity, while building overall health. This can also help to keep blood sugar levels stable so you’re not as vulnerable to cravings.

Fermented foods like sauerkraut and kimchee, miso soup, and other cultured foods are excellent additions to a detox program. They supply essential enzymes and probiotics to support optimal gut cleansing and rebalancing of your microbiome for overall health.
Cruciferous vegetables like broccoli, cauliflower, cabbage, arugula, kale, and others are also excellent for detox. These vegetables provide powerful nutrients including sulfur-based compounds that support liver health and detoxification, as well as immunity, hormone balance, and other areas of health.

During detox, try to avoid inflammatory foods including dairy, gluten, sugar, alcohol, red meat, and processed foods. These items can hinder your detox progress and put extra strain on your liver and gut health.

Dehydration is another common cause of detox side effects and issues, because toxins on their way out can get stuck in transit and be redistributed to other areas if they’re not removed properly. To thoroughly flush out toxins, plan to drink at least half your body weight in ounces of filtered water and/or herbal teas.

Effective Detox Supplements

There are a number of powerful yet gentle natural ingredients, botanicals, mushrooms, and compounds that can offer effective detoxification support, while preventing detox side effects. Natural detox binders including modified citrus pectin, alginates, kelp, and fulvic acid are at the top of this list. These effective detox agents help to bind and eliminate toxins in the gut and circulation system, to allow for more thorough detoxification of organs and tissues. By using targeted, clinically researched natural binders, we can mop up circulating toxins and prevent them from being reabsorbed through the gut wall.

Medicinal mushrooms are also excellent for detoxification, because similar to the binders listed above, they also help to absorb circulating toxins like a sponge. Mushrooms help to exchange toxins with powerful nutrients they provide, offering additional healing support to organs and tissues that have been damaged by toxic burden.

After adding gentle binders to your detox program, you can begin to incorporate targeted herbs and nutrients that provide in depth support for your liver, kidneys, and other organs of elimination. I recommend ingredients including milk thistle, dandelion, astragalus, cilantro, Lipoic Acid, MSM, sulfured amino acids, and other powerful detox enhancers. These natural detox ingredients help to stimulate a deeper detox and boost the activity of key detox organs and systems, for comprehensive, total-body cleansing. When combined with gentle binders listed above, these intensive detox agents can be used safely without triggering a detox overload.

Detox Breathwork

We are always detoxifying—and our breath cycle is the ultimate example. When we breathe out, we are letting go of CO2, as well as toxins from our blood. And on the other hand, when we breath in, we’re nourishing our entire body with fresh oxygen—the vital nutrient of life. Practicing conscious breathwork during detox, either with meditation or other similar practices, can help boost our detoxification capacity on all levels—physical, mental, and psychospiritual. Stress can be a huge contributor to toxins in your body, and simple breath work and meditation can help, while lowering inflammation and reducing detox side effects as well.

Moving Toxins Out

Detoxification relies on movement to effectively escort toxins out of your body. During detox, simple exercise is essential to keep your lymphatic system moving and preventing toxic stagnation. It also increases oxygenation and enhances the elimination of toxins from cells, tissues, and organs. Even 15 minutes a day of walking can be of benefit. Yoga, Tai Chi, and Qi Gong are also excellent mind-body exercises for detoxification and healing.

Don’t Give Up!

Even if you take it slow, a gentle cleanse may seem challenging to stick with. But with these tips, you can incorporate detoxification into your regular routine without having to endure strict dietary deprivation or harsh detox side effects that are common with other aggressive cleanse programs. By including these targeted detox strategies into your health ritual, you can support and enhance your body’s ability to detoxify naturally, and boost energy and vitality in the process.
