How Age Impacts Your Gut Health (and What to Do About It)

Recent studies show that gut bacteria shape aging at its core. As you age, your microbiome (the trillions of microorganisms that live in your gut and on your body) begins to undergo a series of changes that affect everything from digestion and cognitive abilities to muscle strength and skin elasticity. 

Scientists are now finding that the microbiome itself plays a significant role in causing aging. The reasons for this shed light on how you can enhance your gut health and avoid certain age-related gut changes. Here is a deeper look at how your gut microbiota starts to transform over time and predicts how healthy you will age. 

Bifidobacteria Populations Decline

Scientists consistently find that beneficial Bifidobacteria decrease as we age. These bacteria are vital because they keep your gut healthy, make vitamins, support your immune system, and more. Research shows adults over 40 have much lower Bifidobacteria levels than younger adults and children. The numbers keep dropping with each decade. One study showed older adults had substantially fewer Bifidobacteria than children and younger adults.

When these helpful bacteria decrease, your body feels the impact. Bifidobacteria help control inflammation and create compounds that feed your intestinal cells. Their declining numbers also affect other aspects of gut health.

A Rise in Pro-Inflammatory Microbes

Harmful bacteria increase as beneficial bacteria decrease in your gut with age. Research shows older adults typically have more potentially damaging bacteria, including certain Enterobacteriaceae, Escherichia/Shigella, and other inflammatory species.

One team of researchers discovered that older adults had higher levels of problematic bacteria than healthy younger adults. These changes lead to “inflammaging” — ongoing low-grade inflammation that can smolder in your body for years unchecked and lead to various diseases.

Changes in Gut Barrier Function

The effects of aging on your gut’s protective barrier raise serious concerns. Research shows several changes after 40:

  • Your gut makes less butyrate, a fatty acid that protects and strengthens the gut barrier.
  • You produce fewer tight junction proteins that seal gut contents inside.
  • Your intestinal wall becomes more permeable (known as “leaky gut”).

Researchers have found that gut bacteria from older adults made less protective butyrate than younger adults. These barrier changes let inflammatory molecules leak into the bloodstream, affecting various tissues in the body, including skin, brain, and joint tissues. This helps explain why gut health is linked to many aging symptoms like wrinkles and joint pain.

Gut Health and Anti-Aging: What Research Shows

In one study, scientists transferred stool samples from young mice into older ones for two years. The results surprised everyone: Mice receiving “young” microbiomes had fewer inflammation markers and also showed reduced signs of inflammaging.

The science goes deeper. Metabolic modeling revealed just how many cellular functions depend on the microbiome. These functions include nucleotide metabolism, cellular replication, and homeostasis. These metabolic interactions decline as we age, driving our health and aging path.

Effect on Cognitive Function and Memory:

Research has revealed that higher levels of Verrucomicrobia bacteria may help improve verbal learning, visual scanning, and cognitive flexibility. In one study, researchers also found that more Firmicutes bacteria were related to better spatial perception, visual memory, and overall memory function.

Studies have found that gut-derived metabolites like trimethylamine N-oxide (TMAO) can speed up brain aging and hurt cognitive function. This bacterial byproduct changes neuroinflammation and cognitive function as we age. This research illustrates how gut bacteria directly shape our brain’s health.

Connection to Frailty and Muscle Loss:

Changes in gut microbiome also relate to physical decline in aging. A study in Experimental Gerontology highlighted how gut bacteria affect physical frailty through sarcopenia, the loss of muscle mass and function that comes with age. Scientists identified specific gut microbial, inflammatory, and metabolic patterns in older people with physical frailty and sarcopenia. They found that certain bacterial metabolites are related to weaker muscles and increased frailty in older adults with heart disease.

Factors That Influence Your Gut in Midlife

Your choices play a huge role in how your gut health evolves with age. Here are some of the most influential.

Dietary Patterns and Fiber Intake:

Your diet ranks as one of, if not the, most influential external factor shaping gut composition in midlife. Research shows how eating habits directly affect which microbial communities flourish in your intestines. Some studies have revealed that long-term dietary habits create distinct gut microbial “enterotypes” — different ecosystem patterns in your digestive tract.

Your fiber intake significantly affects your microbial diversity. Older adults who eat Mediterranean-style diets packed with plant foods tend to have greater microbial diversity and beneficial bacteria populations, according to some research. And studies have shown that different dietary patterns can predict inflammation, oxidative stress, and intestinal microbiota composition as we age.

Use of Medications Like Antibiotics and NSAIDs:

People tend to take more medications in midlife, which often leads to collateral damage in the gut. Antibiotics, although sometimes essential, disrupt gut ecosystems by killing both harmful and beneficial bacteria.

NSAIDs (non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs) also create unique challenges. In one study, researchers showed how NSAID use in older adults changes gut microbiota composition. While these medications reduced beneficial bacterial populations, probiotic supplements were shown to help reduce some of the damage.

Genetics and Environmental Exposures:

Your genetic makeup shapes your gut composition beyond diet and medications. Studies have found specific human genetic variants linked to gut microbial populations. And other research has shown how heredity influences both gut microbiota and metabolic responses.

Life experiences stack up to affect your gut health too: Early-life factors like birth method and infant feeding mix with daily influences such as stress, exercise habits, and sleep quality. Exercise stands out as particularly helpful — studies show it can positively change gut microbial populations and might offset some age-related changes.

Probiotic Strains That Support an Aging Gut:

Each probiotic works differently in an aging gut. Scientists have discovered specific strains that work better for older adults. A randomized, double-blind study revealed that Lactobacillus gasseri KS-13, Bifidobacterium bifidum G9-1, and Bifidobacterium longum MM-2 helped reduce inflammation in older adults.

Lactobacillus acidophilus NCFM mixed with lactitol helps improve gut microbiota in elderly people who use NSAIDs. This combination helps offset medication-related issues. 

Prebiotics and Polyphenols in Your Diet:

Prebiotics feed your gut’s beneficial bacteria and play a vital role in supporting overall gut health. Foods naturally rich in prebiotics include:

  • Resistant starch from cooled potatoes and rice
  • Inulin-rich foods like chicory root, Jerusalem artichokes, and onions
  • Pectin-rich fruits such as apples and citrus

Also important: Polyphenols, antioxidant-rich compounds found in colorful plants, help nourish your gut health and promote healthier aging. Research shows that anthocyanins in berries, catechins in green tea, and resveratrol in grape skins boost beneficial bacteria. These ingredients increase butyrate production for increased gut barrier protection.

Lifestyle habits that promote microbial diversity

Your lifestyle choices also shape your gut’s bacterial makeup. Exercise benefits your gut bacteria and increases butyrate-producing bacteria. Remember, staying consistent matters more than pushing yourself too hard.

You must read and understand our cancellation policy before making a reservation.

Cancellation and refund policies are put in place to ensure the smooth operation of the retreat and to protect the interests of all participants. By making a reservation for this retreat, you acknowledge and agree to the following cancellation policy:

  • On or Before July 1st: Full refund less 10% of your total purchase
  • July 2nd – July 31st: 50% refund of your total purchase
  • On or After August 1st: Non-refundable

Applicable refunds are calculated based on your total purchase, which includes retreat fees and additional nights purchased.

Timely Cancellation Notification: To be eligible for any potential refund, you must notify us of your cancellation at retreats@dreliaz.org and receive an acknowledgment within the timeframe specified in the cancellation policy above. Failure to provide timely notice will result in the forfeiture of your payments.

It is your responsibility to carefully review and understand the cancellation policy before making a reservation. We recommend also considering travel insurance or other forms of coverage to protect yourself against unforeseen circumstances that may require cancellation.

By making a reservation for this retreat, you agree to abide by the cancellation policy and release the organizers, facilitators, and any associated individuals from any liability, claims, or damages arising from cancellation and refund-related matters.

Payment plan details

Payment plan consists of 3 installments and includes a $300 upcharge per registrant. The 1st installment is due upon purchase, the 2nd installment will be charged automatically to the card on file 30 days from initial payment and the 3rd installment will be changed 60 days from initial payment.

Payment Plan is available through June 1st.
