Practiced by ancient civilizations worldwide, fasting dates back hundreds of thousands of years. Research shows that the health benefits of fasting often go beyond simple calorie restriction by triggering powerful cellular repair processes and metabolic changes in the body. It also plays a vital part in promoting longevity, improving metabolic health, enhancing cognitive function, and more.
Fasting gives your digestive system a break and slows down physical processing. It gives your body a chance to conserve warmth and energy. Fasting also promotes mental clarity. If you think about it, digestion relates to mental digestion. That’s why many people report feeling mentally clear after fasting for a few days.
The Science Behind Fasting
Scientists have discovered that our bodies undergo remarkable physiological changes when we stop eating. The human body adapts through complex cellular and metabolic processes during fasting periods. Modern science continues to uncover these sophisticated survival mechanisms.
Metabolic changes are the most pronounced: The body depletes its glycogen stores and starts using other energy sources after 12–36 hours without food. Studies demonstrate that blood glucose levels drop significantly during fasting periods. Adults with obesity show better insulin resistance after following an 8-week alternate-day fasting program. The body adapts to fasting through complex changes in energy use and moves from glucose-based to fat-based metabolism naturally.
The hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis also adapts substantially when people fast. Scientists have found that fasting causes complex changes in cortisol levels. Short-term fasting typically raises cortisol levels at first, but these levels may decrease during longer fasting periods.
The thyroid responds to fasting as well. Extended fasting periods lead to lower blood levels of thyrotropin and T3/T4. These changes show the body’s sophisticated ability to conserve energy and regulate metabolism when food isn’t available.
Studies show that 16–18 hour fasts can boost your metabolism substantially, even if you don’t lose weight. A key study revealed that eating earlier in the day improved blood sugar and blood pressure as effectively as medications.
Intermittent Fasting
The most beneficial form of fasting is intermittent fasting. It activates a process called autophagy, Greek for “eating of self.” Autophagy is a balancing response to different stressors and is critical for cellular repair and preservation. It’s an essential, homeostatic process in which cellular components are degraded and recycled in the cell and is a crucial defense mechanism against cancer, infection, and neurodegenerative diseases. Autophagy plays a role in removing abnormal proteins, clearing damaged organelles (the components inside the cells, such as mitochondria), and eliminating intracellular pathogens. Intermittent fasting upregulates autophagy in many organs, such as the liver and even the brain.
By spacing out meals, intermittent fasting uses time and space to promote healing. When there is more time between meals and more time between the activity of our digestive system, it allows our digestive system and cells to repair themselves.
The timing of the fasting is important — it is best to start eating early in the day and begin fasting earlier in the afternoon. An ideal example is to eat between 8 a.m. and 4 p.m. Repair and healing take place during times of rest, and when we slow down and allow for greater space, it has profound healing effects on multiple levels, fundamentally changing our physiology in the process.
Also, overeating, particularly in the evening, is hard on the liver. By reducing the digestive burden on the liver, intermittent fasting can give the liver time to process food and toxins and help regenerate liver tissue. Most importantly, do not eat three hours before bedtime.
What Fasting Means for Your Health
Research shows the many benefits of well-laid-out fasting plans (see “Intermittent Fasting” below).
Scientists have found that intermittent fasting helps improve health markers in several ways. Fasting causes human growth hormone (HGH) levels to increase and insulin levels to decrease. It also changes the expression of certain genes. In addition, fasting increases metabolic rate and the release of the fat-burning hormone norepinephrine (noradrenaline). Other benefits of intermittent fasting include weight loss, lower blood pressure, better insulin sensitivity, reduction of inflammatory markers, improved heart and brain health, cancer prevention, and antiaging.
Therapeutic Applications of Intermittent Fasting
I use intermittent fasting for treating a range of conditions at my clinic, including:
Kidney disease: Intermittent fasting some cases of kidney disease, intermittent fasting, along with a low-glycemic, anti-inflammatory diet, can be healing.
Lung health: Intermittent fasting can help shut down metabolically induced damage to the lungs.
Keto diet: The most effective way to use the keto diet is to combine it with intermittent fasting. There is evidence that doing intermittent fasting with or without a ketogenic diet for a short while, such as once a week, or even once a month, helps create a positive shift in health and metabolism.
Joint inflammation: Intermittent fasting can help reduce inflammation and the burden of proinflammatory compounds that can accumulate in joints. Be sure to maintain adequate hydration for optimal joint health.
Chemo: In the clinic, I modify my patients’ programs (including dietary guidelines) based on the conventional treatments they are receiving. This helps shift the mitochondrial metabolism while the effect of the drug is at its peak in the body. We can do this by combining prolonged intermittent fasting with a calorie-restricted ketogenic diet (together with the use of honokiol—an active anticancer compound from Magnolia bark). This strategy must be timed around chemotherapy to ensure the effects are optimized during the drug’s first three half-lives. The regimen will therefore vary based on the half-life of whichever specific drug a patient is taking.
Mitochondrial health: Intermittent fasting can help regulate the energy-generation mechanisms that cause abnormal mitochondrial function.
Final Thoughts on Fasting
Modern science confirms what ancient civilizations learned through practice – fasting brings remarkable benefits to human health and well-being. Recent studies show that going without food for set periods triggers powerful cell repair in our bodies. This process improves metabolic flexibility and promotes longer life. These discoveries connect our ancestors’ survival adaptations to modern health practices that help us thrive today.
