The Aging Brain: 5 New Studies That Will Make You Rethink Your Habits

There is no shortage of studies on brain health. You can do a quick Google search any day of the week and find something new on the topic, from how making music safeguards cognitive function to why being a workaholic is bad news for your cerebral cortex. Here, I’m delving into five compelling studies from 2025 that offer unique insights into the aging brain.

1. The Surprising Benefits of Eating Walnuts for Breakfast

The idea that walnuts improve brain function is not new — many studies have singled out this omega-3-rich nut for its cognitive-boosting powers. What’s unique about this latest research is the specific benefit timing associated with walnuts. 

Published in the journal Food & Function, the study revealed that consuming walnuts at breakfast helps enhance reaction times during cognitive activities throughout the day, allowing for quicker thinking.1 Interestingly, memory improvements from eating walnuts did not occur immediately but emerged approximately six hours later. This indicates a delayed benefit that could support mental performance in the afternoon. Also, brain imaging tests showed altered activity in areas linked to attention and memory processing following walnut intake.

Walnuts have a unique advantage over other nuts — they are particularly rich in alpha-linolenic acid (ALA), a plant-based omega-3 fatty acid that the body can convert into docosahexaenoic acid (DHA). Sufficient levels of DHA,  a critical structural component of the brain, are essential for cognitive performance and neuroprotection.

Walnuts are also abundant in polyphenolic compounds, known for their strong antioxidant properties. They play a vital role in reducing oxidative stress and inflammation in the brain, two processes that can lead to cognitive decline and neurodegenerative diseases like Alzheimer’s.

2. The Hidden Costs of Working Too Much

In our constantly connected world, the pressure to work longer hours is ever-present. Many people wear their tireless work ethic as a badge of honor, yet this lifestyle can have detrimental impacts on brain health. 

A study published in the journal Occupational and Environmental Medicine found that individuals who routinely worked long hours exhibited noticeable changes in their brain structure, particularly affecting areas associated with cognitive function and emotional regulation.2

One key finding is the thinning of the cerebral cortex, which plays a crucial role in memory and decision-making processes. As the cortex thins, individuals may experience a decline in cognitive abilities, making tasks that require focus and quick thinking increasingly challenging. 

Not surprisingly, alterations in brain structure can lead to emotional exhaustion and mental health issues. The sustained pressure of overworking leads to burnout, a state of chronic stress characterized by feelings of helplessness and detachment. Burnout not only impairs job performance but also adversely affects mental health, increasing susceptibility to anxiety and depression.

Given the serious implications of working long hours, it is crucial to prioritize a balanced approach to work and life. Take regular breaks, go on vacation, surround yourself in a supportive environment, and practice self-care and mindfulness activities like meditation to help mitigate the negative effects of long work days. 

3. Striking the Right Balance: How Exercise & Too Much Sitting Affect Brain Aging 

Emerging research highlights that both extremes — too little and too much exercise — can negatively impact brain health and accelerate cognitive decline. A recent study published in Science Advances reveals that exercise levels are closely linked to changes in brain structure and function associated with aging.3

The study found that individuals who engage in insufficient physical activity tend to experience greater brain atrophy, particularly in areas linked to memory and executive functions. Conversely, excessive exercise was associated with stress and inflammation, which also detrimentally affect brain integrity. 

Why does this happen? Physical activity influences blood flow, neurogenesis, and inflammation — all critical factors in maintaining cognitive function. Too little exercise deprives the brain of essential nutrients and oxygen, while too much can cause physical stress and oxidative damage. 

The key takeaway is that moderate, consistent physical activity supports optimal brain health, reducing the risk of cognitive problems later in life. Tailor your workouts to avoid extremes. Incorporate moderate activities like brisk walking, yoga, or swimming, aiming for approximately 150 minutes per week. Remember, consistency is more important than intensity.

A separate study underscores a surprising and concerning link between sitting time and brain health in older adults. Even those who exercise regularly are at risk: prolonged sitting accelerates brain shrinkage, a hallmark of cognitive decline and aging.

A study published in the Alzheimer’s & Dementia Journal reveals that older adults who spend more hours sitting each day experience faster reductions in brain volume, particularly in regions associated with memory and thinking skills.4 This brain atrophy correlates with declines in memory performance and overall cognitive function, making sitting an independent risk factor for cognitive deterioration.

The impact is even more pronounced for individuals carrying the APOE-ε4 gene, associated with Alzheimer’s risk. For these individuals, longer sitting times were linked to worse memory and cognitive performance. The findings highlight that physical activity alone isn’t enough — sedentary behavior poses its own threat to brain health.

Spending less time sitting may be just as crucial as increasing your exercise routine. Simple lifestyle changes, like standing more often, taking short walks, or breaking up long periods of sitting with movement, can help protect your brain from age-related decline.

4. Low Vitamin K Leads to Memory Loss and More

Vitamin K is traditionally known for its essential role in blood clotting, but new evidence suggests it also supports brain functions. A recent study published in The Journal of Nutrition shows that low levels of this fat-soluble vitamin may contribute to memory problems and increased brain inflammation.5

According to the research, when vitamin K levels dip, the brain may become more susceptible to inflammatory processes, which are strongly linked to cognitive decline and neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer’s. The findings suggest that insufficient vitamin K impairs the brain’s ability to combat inflammation. 

Foods rich in vitamin K include green leafy greens, broccoli, cabbage, asparagus, sauerkraut, kiwi, blueberries, figs, natto (fermented soybeans), meat, cheese, and eggs. You may also want to talk to your doctor about a K2 supplement (the most bioavailable form of the vitamin). Taking vitamin K2 in a formula with vitamin D3 may provide synergistic benefits. 

5. Prioritize Social Wellness to Reduce Dementia Risk

Groundbreaking research underscores the powerful impact of social engagement on brain health. 

A study published in the journal Alzheimer’s & Dementia involving seniors showed that older adults who stay socially active tend to develop dementia approximately five years later than those with less active social lives (around age 92 compared to 87).6 

Engaging in everyday activities such as dining out, participating in bingo, going on day trips, or attending religious gatherings was linked to a 38% reduction in the risk of developing dementia. This five-year delay in disease onset could also create substantial healthcare savings, say the researchers. 

Singing is particularly beneficial: Creating music, regardless of skill level, has been shown in several studies to boost cognitive reserve, the brain’s ability to resist age-related decline. Music stimulates neuroplasticity and helps form new neural connections, both of which have profound benefits for your brain.7 

These studies offer valuable insights into practical steps you can take to support your cognitive well-being. From incorporating walnuts into your morning meals and balancing your workouts to managing work hours, getting enough vitamin K, and prioritizing your social engagement, there are multiple avenues to explore for healthier brain aging. It’s never too early or too late to start implementing these strategies.

CANCELLATION & REFUND POLICY

You must read and understand our cancellation policy before making a reservation.

Cancellation and refund policies are put in place to ensure the smooth operation of the retreat and to protect the interests of all participants. By making a reservation for this retreat, you acknowledge and agree to the following cancellation policy:

  • On or Before July 1st: Full refund less 10% of your total purchase
  • July 2nd – July 31st: 50% refund of your total purchase
  • On or After August 1st: Non-refundable

Applicable refunds are calculated based on your total purchase, which includes retreat fees and additional nights purchased.

Timely Cancellation Notification: To be eligible for any potential refund, you must notify us of your cancellation at retreats@dreliaz.org and receive an acknowledgment within the timeframe specified in the cancellation policy above. Failure to provide timely notice will result in the forfeiture of your payments.

It is your responsibility to carefully review and understand the cancellation policy before making a reservation. We recommend also considering travel insurance or other forms of coverage to protect yourself against unforeseen circumstances that may require cancellation.

By making a reservation for this retreat, you agree to abide by the cancellation policy and release the organizers, facilitators, and any associated individuals from any liability, claims, or damages arising from cancellation and refund-related matters.

Payment plan consists of 3 installments and includes a $300 upcharge per registrant. The 1st installment is due upon purchase, the 2nd installment will be charged automatically to the card on file 30 days from initial payment and the 3rd installment will be changed 60 days from initial payment.

Payment Plan is available through June 1st.
